Each house or residential area in New York City is zoned to an elementary school and a middle school. 

New York is home to some of the most important libraries, universities, and research centers in the world. The city is particularly known as a center for research in medicine and the life sciences. The City University of New York is the third-largest public university system in the United States. The New York Public Library is one of the largest public library systems in the United States.

The weather in New York goes from one extreme to the other. In the summer the temperatures can become almost unbearably hot and humid, whereas in the winter it is often bitterly cold, with considerable amounts of snow. Rain is more common than snow in winter, because the Atlantic Ocean helps keep temperatures warmer than in the interior Northeast. Snowfall varies from year to year, usually averaging about 2 ft (60 cm) in total.Travellers are always advised to check the New York weather forecast before travelling to the city.

New York City has one of the most modern health systems in the world. The world famous cancer hospital, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, dedicated to excellence in the treatment of cancer is located here. Some other famous hospitals of New York City are the New York University Medical Center, New York Presbyterian Hospital, and Mount Sinai Medical Center.

New York is often called "the media capital of the world". It is home to several of the largest media conglomerates in the world, including Time Warner, News Corporation, the Hearst Corporation, and Viacom. New York City is a home to four of the 10 largest papers in the United States. These include The New York Times, The New York Daily News, The New York Post and The Wall Street Journal. New York City has a tradition as an important place in radio broadcasting.
