An Introduction to New York City

The Big Apple offers the best of everything a in city, from museums to street vendors. It is a world center for finance, fashion, art, publishing, broadcasting, and advertising. The borough of Manhattan, with its famous skyline, theaters and fabulous shopping, is the main attraction for tourists. High-quality cuisine of every kind in the world can be found there. Every kind of professional sport in the US is represented in New York.

As a major world transportation center, New York is readily accessible by any form of transportation. Those who arrive by car should leave driving in the city to residents, traffic and parking can be extremely difficult. Walking or mass transit are much easier ways to get around for the traveler. The extensive subway system is a good choice but should be avoided late in the evenings.

New York is in southeastern New York State on the Atlantic Ocean. It is a world transportation center and one of the world's foremost seaports. Founded in 1625 by the Dutch, it became British in 1664 and was the first capital of the US in 1789. UN headquarters were built there in 1952. The climate is temperate, with hot summers, when city dwellers flee the heat. Visitors, too, prefer the crisp, clear weather of autumn.
